electra310: (Wicked)
Happy new year, everyone! I'm up a little earlier than I ought to be, given the lateness of the hour when I went to bed. But the Toast appears to have sprung a leak somewhere, probably from exposure to pine needles, and the results when two people sleep in it are comical, to say the least. At least Mike and I really like each other. =) When I get back to Chicago I will have to make sure to spend some quality time with the patch kit that came with the bed.

New Year's Eve kinda blew, though it had its good parts. While we were heading into Freeport, we blew a tire on 90-94 and ended up on a tiny left-hand median strip where, of course, cars flagrantly disregard laws regarding both speed and slowing down or changing lanes when passing stopped cars. I was on the passenger side, and I couldn't even open my door for fear of death. We had Casey and Pigwidgeon in the car with us, and they were scared by the noise every time the CTA train rushed directly passed us, and I think they suffered from the fumes, too. But eventually an IDOT emergency truck grabbed us and hauled us off the road (with us still in the car) and dropped us at a filling station. The driver even helped us get our runabout on, which was nice. Had to drop eighty dollars for a new tire, which was not nice, but at least it was a reasonable price.

We arrived in Freeport just in time to make it to the rehearsal for Lori's wedding. It's going to be gorgeous, and when I'm done here I've got to go get ready for that. I'm doing Scripture reading, which is a nice smallish part that doesn't require dropping money on a dress. Woo! She's got six bridemaids, but no flower girl or ring bearer, which is a little sad. Anyhow, after that Mike and I were both tired and a little stressed, we argued and made up, then went to the rehearsal dinner. I got to see a lot of old friends from high school, which seems like a long time ago all of a sudden. It hasn't even been quite five years, though it's close now.

After that, we came back to my folks' house, where they were having a New Years Eve party. It was pretty nice for awhile, I made serious chippage in Texas Hold' Em poker, but it seems that my parents' friends get more obnoxious the older I get. I'm not sure why, if it's midlife crisis or just that I understand more of what they're saying and doing, or just that when you get older they don't restrain themselves so much. Mike, who is not used to that sort of carrying-on, departed the party early, and I followed. Later we came out to the living room and cuddled and listened to the Wicked soundtrack, that my sister got me for Christmas. Much love.

I was going to spend time talking about everything that happened this year, and ended up taking all my time talking about New Year's Eve instead. I guess that's easier, focusing on the little instead of the big. It was a very good year, a very memorable year. I graduated, got my first good job, got married to the man of my dreams in a wedding that was quite wonderful. And I've managed to get back often enough to keep old friendships alive, in Freeport and at Knox. Here's to still doing that in the new year, even if it means learning to cook orange peels and my old shoes. I'm always open to new culinary experiences... =)

And this year means moving to Champaign, and law school! I can't wait! So many changes, and now we'll finally be settling in someplace where we can stay for a few years. That's going to feel really good.
