Not All Robots Respect the Rules
Aug. 17th, 2004 03:15 pmWell, here I am again in the University of Chicago library, cramming all my internet chores into a single orgiastic session. I miss being able to talk to people online, since I'm on when most people are not. I miss being able to talk to people in person, really. Mike and I are still getting along great, and I'm still real happy about this whole marriage deal, but I miss all my Galesburg friends. And I miss having a phone book. I like my apartment, but it's starting to feel pretty isolated.
There's been some fun, though. This weekend we went out to Freeport to pick up more of my stuff and Mike's Life magazines. We made fabulous time, and got there in time to eat brunch with my folks and Kirsten. While we were there, I got a call from my friend Lori, who was one of my bridesmaids, reminding me of her bachelorette party that evening, which I had totally forgotten about. Eeek!
Luckily, my adorable husband was understanding of my scatterbrainedness, and took me out to ShopKo so I could use some of our wedding gift cards on a sweater and slacks to wear, as all my nice clothes were back in Chicago. Then he drove home by himself while I rode up to Chicago with Lori and some other friends. We ate at a really nice Italian restaurant in Wrigleyville, and then went to see Blue Man Group. I'd never seen it before, and it was really, really cool. We were in Poncho seats, which for me meant front row center. Eeek! Cool and scary and a little messy, all at the same time. One girl couldn't make it, so we used her ticket to bring along Lori's new blow-up doll, Mr. Stud. He got to go up on stage for a little while. Afterwards I took a cab home along Lakeshore, and got to see all the gorgeous city lights. A very good night.
The next day, Sunday, Mike and I went back to the church we went to last week. The people there are really nice, even if the worship style is a bit more sedate than I'm accustomed to. That evening we went back for the young adults group and had a potluck dinner and bible study with other people around our age. It was really fun, and I got to show off my cooking talents with a fantastic chocolate cake I made. Not a kek-cake, one I actually made from scratch, with flour and butter and cocoa and everything. It had frosting like homemade fudge. Yum. Next time I think I will make a German chocolate cake.
I've been doing a lot of cooking and baking lately, mostly to give me something to do. Being unemployed makes me antsy and uneasy, and at least cooking is productive. This morning I got up early and made coffee and buttermilk pancakes from scratch. I love my new coffee machine, it dispenses by the cup, which is handy since Mike doesn't like coffee. I need to figure out how to make it keep the heater on for more than an hour, then it will be perfect. Coffee all day.
So if any of you guys are coming to Chicago, make sure to come and visit us. I will cook for you, and it will be fabulous. I have all sorts of recipes to make, and need an audience. Plus, I miss you all, whole bunches. The cable modem guy hooks us up on Friday, then look out!
