electra310: (Badger Counsel)
It's official! I'm official! I got my 711 proof-of-license faxed to me yesterday, and I am now a provisionally licensed attorney! I can actually do real lawyer things like speak in court and throw people in jail with my evil brain powers! Sort of. In any case, I start today with my first set of bench trials, which I am both excited and nervous as hell about. I did all the prep work myself, all the victim contacts, wrote up the questions and researched the histories of the defendants. No one knows this set of cases like I do, but actually going up there and examining witnesses and talking to the judge is a bit daunting after all this time of watching from the sidelines. Luckily, one of the actual attorneys will be down there to keep me from going too far adrift, which makes me feel a bit better.

In a way, it's almost strange to be so close to my goal. One more year, and I'll have accomplished a goal I've been working on in some way since I was fourteen years old. I went to high school, captained the speech and debate teams so I would be a better public speaker, worked my butt off for graduation with commendation so I would get into a good college. Got into a good college, earned some scholarships, took philosophy as a major to make myself a better thinker. Did prelaw internships, kept my GPA up, did my LSAT prep so that I would get into a good law school. Got into a good law school, worked and worked and worked not to flunk out so that I would become an attorney. And here I am, just one step away, basically. Sure, it's a big step, one more year of law school and the bar exam, but I know I'll do it. It's practically in my hands, and it's both exciting and scary.

In non-law-related news, we have a new kitten! Elizabeth has gone to strut her stuff in the adoption cages at Petsmart, where we have been visiting her, and now we have a new babycat in the house. His name is Denny, and he's a 9-week old orange DLH male who has been unferal for less than a week now. Big progress this morning when he ended his two day vigil behind the toilet to come out and make me pet all of him when I was scratching his chin. He's someone's perfect lapcat just waiting to happen. Right now he's still very dirty and has bits of mud and bushes in his fur, but that's going to be a gradual process to get out. I'm working some out with my fingers as I pet him, but the last thing we want to do at this point is the trauma of a bath. It's entirely possible that when we introduce him to Victoria, she will pin him down and take care of the job. Hopefully he will be more appreciative of the attention than Elizabeth was. Pictures will come as soon as we can get him out of the bathroom. But for now, I am off to law things up a bit. Wish me luck!
