It's almost my birthday! I am pleased with this fact, even though turning 25 makes me a real, no-fooling adult person, and that's a little unnerving. I used to think when I was a little kid about what I would be like at 21 and 25, and though the memories are hazy, I know I envisioned myself differently. But that's good. I was a pessimistic little snot, really. Up until college, when Mike and I started seriously dating, I rarely even let myself imagine what it would be like for me to fall in love and get married. Boys don't like fat girls, and I didn't want to set myself up for disappointment by creating fantasies only to have them crushed. This is a thought I came up with when I was about twelve, which should give you an idea of how my mind works. In any case, I used to envision myself at 25, living in a big city, a lawyer (I was fuzzy on the concept of how long it takes to do all this school crap), with a pet snake, and finally having learned to clean up after myself. The lawyer part is working out okay so far, assuming, yet again, that I don't flunk all my finals this term, but just about everything else is different.
Different is good. I might have liked to have a nice ball python to sun on a heat rock in his tank and let crawl on my arms while I watch TV, but a city ordinance against constrictors made it impossible to get one during college. I started in with budgies instead, and then we got Victoria. I am more than fond of my current pets, so that's really just fine. And though I may go back to the big city sooner rather than later, I find that cities like Champaign-Urbana are really my favorite in terms of living and getting around. Big enough for variety in commerce and a decent bus line, small enough to feel safe and to not have serious traffic issues if you know where to drive. And, of course, Mike is one of those very good, can't imagine how things could be any other way differences. We complete each other, corny and cliched as that sounds, and neither of us would be doing nearly so well, I think, without the other around. And, after only two and three-quarter years, I think I've completely gotten used to my initials being CD instead of CJ. Good for me!
Anyway, I thought it was high time I made a post when I was feeling pretty good, and not depressed about something or other. I got tomorrow off work, so we're going up to my folks' house to celebrate Easter and my birthday, and it will be a lot of fun, even if it means a six-hour drive all in one day. Oh, and also, I made galleries for the pets, for those of you who haven't seen them or haven't seen them in awhile.
